My pick of the day is this melanocholic song from badal…this was probably the first of the assignments of s.j away from.raj kapoor…with barsaat and then awara under their belt..the critics were of the opinion at that time ..that it was the genious of raj kapoor’s musical knowledge..that was translated in their work…but with baadal s.j finally proved their mettle…the numbers they churned out for this robin hood type of movie..were to set a benchmark for the forth coming movies through the fifties…1951 ..i have often felt was an iconic year as it established the film industry in actual terms as well as shaped the stars who then went on to become the stars with their trademark…raj kapoor with awaara..created this simpleton image..dev anand who until then..hardly had been noticed formed navketan and baazi gave him.his city smart debonair image…nargis and dilip kumar already were firmly placed..but madhubala created a stir with badal..tarana..lataji finally established herself as the sweetest singer to have walked on this planet..with the songs she sang in.1951… her cloak of noorjehan was now discarded..and she came up with such masterpieces…burman da.with thandi hawaayen..frm naujawan..tum na jaane kis jehan in sazaa.a.anil da had lata’s sweetest songs…man mein kisi ki preet basa le..araam..and all songs of tarana…roshan came up with malhaar…bade armaano se rakha hai balam …c.ramchandra had albela…the genious of sajjad hussain had saiyaan.. all songs ..lataji’s master renditions and then hulchul…aaj mere naseeb ne mujhko rula rula diya…it is amid this galaxy of masterpieces..that the duo of shankar jaikishan came with such melodious songs of all emotions in badal..just listen to the delightful duet..ae dil.na mujhse chupa..sach bata kya huya..lata’s dancing ringing solo..unse pyar ho gaya…and the sorrowful..rota hai mera dil.. same year they also gave music in nageena..tune ..haaye mere zakhme jigar ko chu liya…in both these movies they made lata sing in a higher note…barsaat and awara songs were in a much lower notes..lataji soared with these vocal notes that they set for her…

And just listen to the lyrics of shailendra..” duniya mein savera hone laga..is dil mein andhera hone..har zakhm sisak kar rone laga..kis muhn se kahe qatil hai kaha…the preluding aalaap..in higher notes..and following with excellent orchestration..when there used to be three stanzas..the middle one usually had a slightly diffrnt tune..inmost of the fifties…many music directors followed this trend..
